The Breathing Room · 42 Practices & 17 Breaths

  • 59 Steps

About

Most women are living on the inhale. There is a way of breathing that belongs to women who are always about to be needed. The chest lifts, the shoulders come up a little, the belly stays pulled in, and the breath stops somewhere near the collarbones and never travels any further down. If you watch yourself for one honest minute you will probably catch it happening right now. You have probably been calling that anxiety. It is closer to bracing, and the difference matters, because bracing is something your body is doing on purpose to protect you, and it can be taught to stop. This room is built on one piece of physiology. Your heart speeds up on every breath in and slows down on every breath out. The inhale is the accelerator. The exhale is the brake. A woman who is bracing takes in, and takes on, and holds, and takes in again, and never reaches the part of the breath where her body is allowed to slow down. Everything in here teaches your body to live on the exhale instead. Inside are seventeen breath experiences, named for the moment you need them rather than for the technique they use. Nobody opens an app thinking, I need box breathing. She opens it thinking, I am spiraling about this text. Everyone has needed something from me today. I am scared to walk into this room. I do not know what I want anymore. Come in, find the one that matches your night, and let it meet you there.
