About
For the woman who can name the dish in two seconds. There is one in your family. Only one person knows how to make it, there has never been a written recipe, and if you asked you would be told that you just do it by eye. When she goes, it goes with her, in an afternoon. This is the only journey in Among Roses with a deadline on it. You begin with your own memory, because nobody has ever asked you either. Then you learn to read a recipe as a historical document, which is exactly what it is. Shortage, migration, climate, faith and a marriage, all written in ingredients by women who mostly had no other way of writing anything down. Then you get the interview kit. How to ask so she does not perform. Why you cook side by side instead of sitting across a table. What to do when she says she does not remember. How to turn a handful into a number without ruining it. How to ask to record, and why you film her hands and never her face. There is a whole part for women with no one left to ask, and it is not a smaller version of this journey. Then you cook it wrong four times, make the second phone call, and write five recipes down properly, with the full names and the dates on them, in a form that will still work in 2090. You will end with a recording of a voice saying something completely unremarkable, a photograph of a pan, and a page in your own handwriting. Message the oldest woman you can reach this week. Everything else in here can wait.
