About
Nothing in this journey is about buying anything. It starts by asking you to draw the floor plan of the house you grew up in, and mark where you felt safest, where you avoided, and which door being shut meant something was happening. Then you draw your current home beside it, because everything you do in your own house is either a continuation of the first one or a correction of it, and almost nobody knows which. Then a walkthrough. The threshold, and why every culture that ever built houses had a ritual at the door. The kitchen, and what you are facing while you stand in it. The table, and setting one properly for yourself on an ordinary Wednesday. The seat, and why nobody in the world sits with their back to a door. The bedroom. And the room in your house that has never been decided, which is holding something. Then light, which is the biggest change available to you and costs nothing. What your house smells of, which you are the only person who cannot answer. Sound and texture, the two nobody thinks about because they do not photograph. And underneath all of it, one question that arrives in the middle and stays: where in this building do I exist purely for myself? For a great many women the honest first answer is nowhere. So the journey ends with one square metre. Not a room. A corner, a chair, a single shelf. Nothing in it for anybody else, a function that is not service, and everybody in the house told out loud that it is yours. Eighteen steps. Somebody will put something on it within a fortnight. Move it, and say the sentence again.
